Into the Lungs of Hell
(Music: Mustaine) Instrumental |
The title refers to the Bible, where Michael the Archangel and his cohorts "thrust into the lungs of Hell" to attack Satan. |

Mary Jane
(Music: Mustaine; lyrics: Mustaine, Ellefson) Forgive me father for I have sinned
From the earth up through the trees
No, I can't get away
Beware my friends as you pass by
Forgive me father for I have sinned
Beware my friends as you pass by
It hurts so bad I can't breathe

Contrary to once popular belief, this song is not about marijuana. It is actually about a girl who takes up witchcraft. Eventually, she wants to get out of it and in an effort to do so, she confesses to her father, who not only doesn't forgive Mary Jane, but buries her alive. That's why she haunts the forest. |

502
(Music, lyrics: Mustaine) "Pull over, shithead, this is the cops!" Full tank, pockets lined with cash
The stars above guide me, the moonlight is free.
Driving fast makes me feel good,
Hundreds of miles rolled off today.
Drive until daybreak, always on the go.
Driving fast makes me feel good,
Stars above guide me

"It was a satanic period in my life. I was a guy who liked to get high on some narcs, smoke some pot, drink a bottle of tequilla, and go for a car ride." (Mustaine) References: 502 is the police traffic code for impaired driving, which Mustaine would be arrested for in 1990, forcing him to attend a 12-step program and become clean and sober. |

In My Darkest Hour
(Music: Mustaine; lyrics: Mustaine, Ellefson) In my hour of need
Did you ever think I get lonely?
You'll never know how hard I tried
Things will be better when I'm dead and gone
But oh, how I lived my life for you
I walk, I walk alone into the promised land. There's a better place for me
Time has a way of taking time
Won't you hold me again?
In my darkest hour |
"This song was written the day that I found out that Cliff Burton had died. It's a very moving song for me because it really expresses a lot of the emotion that I was going through. I was really sad and I think the music kind of carries that kind of feeling with it. A lot of people have written our fan club and said, 'Dave, I have nothing really to live for, life sucks, and then you die, ' and that 'this song's given me something to look forward to and I understand now and I see someone like you that also goes through these problems, ' and let's face it, life sucks. But there's certain things that can get you through and when I find out that people were turned on by this music and it gives them hope to carry on and stuff like that, it makes me feel good. Anyway, I hope this song works for you." (Mustaine, 1990) "Maria Ferraro, a true metal legend aptly named 'metal Maria' worked for Megaforce records. She called me the day that Cliff had died or somewhere close to it. No one else from Metallica or their management did. I went straight to the dope man, got some shit and starting singing and crying and writing this song. Although the lyrics have nothing to do with him, his untimely passing gave me this melody that lives in the hearts of metal heads around the world." (Mustaine, 2001) |

Liar
(Music: Mustaine, Ellefson; lyrics: Mustaine) You take great pride
Look deep in the mirror,
Make up your stories,
You're a liar, liar, liar, everyone can see
Start trouble, spread pain
You're a liar, a fucking liar!

Chris Poland, is that Dave's guitar? "Chris Poland - you know what? - he could die tomorrow and it wouldn't affect me... Chris has never made amends to me for stealing all my gear. I had a collector's item Echoplex which just disappeared, all sorts of guitars, which were all stolen to cash in for heroin. I'm willing to forgive and forget, but until he comes and makes amends with me then I'm not willing to give in". (Mustaine, 1992) |

Hook in Mouth
(Music: Mustaine, Ellefson; lyrics: Mustaine) A cockroach in the concrete,
Rewrites every story,
You say you've got the answers,
F is for fighting, R is for red
Put your hand right up my shirt,
Rewrites every story,
I'm not a fish, I'm a man.

This song is about revisionism and censorship, specifically aimed at the PMRC, the Parents Music Resource Center, which forced the band to put "Parental Advisory/Explicit Lyrics" warnings on both Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? and So Far, So Good... So What! "'Hook in Mouth' is one of my favorite songs... it gives me a chance to say how I feel about censorship and the way that people try and tell us what we can and can't listen to". (Mustaine, 1991) Several parts of this song are similar to the George Orwell novel, 1984. It must have been the major inspiration for this song. In the book, the government employs and organization called the Ministry of Truth to alter every piece of literature, especially newspaper articles, in order the make the government look good. The book describes people being created and erased, statistics and figures being changed, all to eliminate any negative feelings or opposition towards the government. Many of the workers for this organization are described just as Dave describes them; little, beady-eyed, bug-like men. In "Hook in Mouth," Dave is comparing the PMRC to the Ministry of Truth. Dave obviously feels that the organization oversteps the bounds of the government by putting warning labels on albums or forcing artists to compromise their integrity in any way. |
